T O P I C R E V I E WBrian BayleyWould anyone have any idea on the authenticity of this Alan Shepard autograph please? Any thoughts on the inscription? Is it his handwriting? Hope so, just picked it up for $65. Many thanks in anticipation.calcheyupFrom what I'm able to zoom in on, my opinion would be that this is genuine. There are things going on in the signature that would require a level of precision I have not seen (or even close) in other Shepard secretarial examples. The only thing that throws me a bit of is that I have seen very few "Moon Shot" books signed in this manner, which seems more typical of his earlier career. Most were signed more hurriedly, and even the ones that weren't, for lack of a better word seem "bolder" than the signature in this example. Someone with more knowledge than myself in the matter may be able to comment, but this seems like an uncommonly clean and "vintage" signature for the "Moon Shot" era signing period.spaced outLooking at the handwriting it does seem consistent with Shepard's. He used lower case script more often but did sometimes switch to all uppercase.Brian BayleyMany thanks to you both for your valuable opinions. I too thought the signature was "vintage" in style but not secretarial. If he donated the book to a cause close to him perhaps he took more time to sign it properly.I've looked at as many examples of his "upper case" handwriting as I can find and there are many consistencies which match this one. But it is always hard when trying to authenticate upper case writing. Many thanks again. It appears I have acquired a bargain!
